Where a love for trees started

It all started with a young man named Sean Sewell who was looking for a job during summer vacation in 2004. Several hurricanes had struck the Florida coast and a local tree service was looking for extra help. Growing up on a farm, Sean Sewell knew how to drive a truck and back a trailer so he was hired to drive a truck and drag brush cleaning up tree limbs. A love for working with trees was born.

Becoming an Arborist

After several years of learning and studying Sean Sewell became an ISA Certified Arborist in 2007. He worked as a tree climber and equipment operator for the same tree service that originally hired him in 2004. As he continued to learn and progress he eventually became a sales arborist and finally an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist in 2017. This is the highest level of achievement offered by the International Society of Arboriculture

Why Arborist Co

Arborist Co was started in 2020 during the pandemic. Because Sean Sewell's child had recently been through chemotherapy, and a bone marrow transplant he was forced to work from home during the pandemic. Instead of meeting with clients on their property and advising them on how to care for their trees, he was now in lockdown, confined to looking at his own trees.

What makes Arborist Co Different?

Arborists are trained on how to care for individual trees and make recommendations for care and treatment based on what is known to be the most effective curative option with the least amount of time spent on a client's property. This approach doesn't take into account how an arborist's actions may affect other species that are closely linked to the pest being targeted. After observing ladybird beetles consume the plant-damaging aphids that he intended to treat with an insecticide, he stopped to think... "If I kill the aphids, it will likely kill the ladybugs, and if I kill the  ladybugs, what happens to the birds, frogs and wasps that depend on them for food?" This was a moral conundrum. “There has to be a better way.”

Better Tree Care

After careful research, he found growers willing to sell their ladybugs at a good price. “If I give the ladybugs reinforcements, I can successfully control the aphids and at the same time provide a sustainable source of food to the birds, frogs, and wasps. How many other pests can I treat with predatory insects?” If this is how he was going to treat his own property, why would he recommend anything less to his clients? And this is how an obsession with natural tree care was born.  When ecosystems are in balance, insect pests, and tree diseases are in check. Everything works together, It is just when humans start introducing foreign chemicals into these ecosystems that we start having problems. Let our arborists help restore balance to your backyard ecosystem by avoiding pesticides and utilizing natural predatory insects and organic disease mitigation strategies.

What can an Arborist do for me?

Arborists have many different areas of focus and may specialize in any area of tree care such as tree removal, tree trimming, tree disease diagnosis and treatment, or tree appraisal. At Arborist Co we specialize in tree pruning, tree removal tree disease diagnosis, treatment, tree risk assessment and tree appraisal.

Many Arborists that treat tree disease will advocate for the use of insecticides in treating tree problems. Insecticides are very effective at killing insects but, this approach doesn't take into account how their actions may affect other species that are closely linked to the pest being targeted. For example, when an arborist encounters a plant damaging pest such as aphids, leafhoppers, beetles, caterpillars, scale, mites, thrips, or moths, the first line of defense for arborists has typically been to spray the tree with an insecticide. After closer examination, you may find a large army of beneficial predatory insects already gearing up to tackle the pest infestation. If an insecticide is used to kill the pest, it will also kill the "good guys" like the ladybugs, assassin bugs, minute pirate bugs, green lacewings, and praying mantids that are helping to control the pests. It will also have devastating effects on other creatures down the line like bees, birds, frogs, lizards, and creatures that inhabit streams and rivers many miles from your home.

What Makes Arborist Co Better?

We, the arborists, at arborist Co are resolved to use Biological Controls to support the balance of beneficial predatory insects. Biological Controls are the natural alternative to using pesticides in controlling plant damaging pests. We can do this by releasing ladybugs, assassin bugs, minute pirate bugs, green lacewings and praying mantids on our clients' properties to help balance the pest predator matrix. By doing this we can successfully control aphids, leafhoppers, beetles, caterpillars, scale, mites, thrips, and moths and at the same time provide a sustainable source of food to the birds, frogs, wasps, lizards, and stream-dwelling creatures. This is how we treat our own property, why would we recommend anything less to our clients? This is our obsession with natural tree care.  When ecosystems are in balance, insect pests, and tree diseases are in check. Everything works together, It is only when humans start introducing foreign chemicals into these ecosystems that we start having problems. Let our arborists help restore balance to your backyard ecosystem by avoiding pesticides and utilizing biological controls or natural predatory insects and organic disease mitigation strategies.
